Chapters may choose to nominate all or a portion of their quota of student members at any time during the final year prior to graduation. Up to fifty 50 percent of the total number of students to be elected may be elected in their penultimate year. It supports the medical profession in its work to achieve a welcoming, diverse, inclusive environment in teaching, learning, caring for patients, and collaboration.

These addressed increasing selection committee diversity; revising selection criteria and training committee members to review applications using a new instrument; broadening student eligibility and inviting applications; reviewing blinded applications; and making final selection decisions based on review and discussion of a rank-ordered list of students that equally weighted academic achievement and professional contributions.

Centered on equity pedagogy, which advocates dismantling structures that create inequity, this holistic selection process has implications for creating equity in awards selection processes during medical education. The University of Minnesota Medical School honors outstanding performance of its students through two national societies, and awards through the University Foundation. The local chapter at the University of Minnesota elects members from the Junior and Senior classes each year.

Specific selection criteria is determined by the local chapter. The number of students elected to AOA is up to one sixth of the graduating class. Alpha Omega Alpha is an honor that accompanies a physician throughout his or her lifetime and is a way for medical students to distinguish themselves in medical school. The Gold Humanism Honor Society GHHS honors senior medical students who "demonstrate excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.

The Society is fast becoming integrated into our educational environment. Students are admitted into GHHS based on responses to a peer nomination survey toward the end of their third year of medical school. The final membership list is confirmed by a faculty and administration selection committee that also ensures adequate representation from all medical school programs, including those on the Duluth campus for years 1 and 2.

GHHS arranges many humanistic events during their year of service including a retreat held annually the day before Match Day for all MS4s. Gold Foundation. Only those currently enrolled in the School of Medicine are eligible. Students participating in dual degree programs are not eligible while they are enrolled in graduate school , but could be eligible during the spring before they leave for graduate school, or in the fall when they are re-enrolled as School of Medicine students. Students eligible for nomination will be notified of the details by email.

Appearing on the election ballot requires the student to provide a standardized CV, formatted to the provided template AOA CV Template , detailing involvement during medical school and a release of information.

We request that students remove any NBME test scores from their application, as these will not be considered during the election. Medical students who are eligible for AOA nomination are reviewed by a committee of faculty and students. The students on the committee are the students who are currently members of AOA.
