They spent a lot of money on many FAs that were much worse than Pujols. Josh Hamilton comes to mind. So does CJ Wilson. Pujols is still at least providing some value, even if it is nowhere close to his prime years.
Some as in negative yes by the numbers — If he wasnt Albert Pujols he would have been cut years ago….. I meant to say that the Pujols contract did not prohibit the Angels from spending n big time free agents like Hamilton and Wilson. Their inability to hit on ANY free agents and their horrible luck with pitching health are much bigger reasons.
I dont think theirs been enough talent behind the arms for health to matter tbh…. Josh Hamilton comes to mind as well but off field issues play into that a good bit. Crawford was just straight trash after he left us. Realmuto in Posey territory?
Too funny. Decent bat but nothing spectacular. Decent behind the plate but nothing spectacular. Yeah but realmuto is good now so smart thing 2 do is extend him and go big oooooopsie 2 years from now. Do you see kind of a paradox there?
Sure it matter when it comes to his salary. I mean if you are paying him for a 7. Grandal was right there with him. But you pay people based on relative value. The Phillies will not extend JT. They played him in a career high games last year. The decline will be swift.
That Mauer contract is easily one of the worse contracts of all time. They paid him like he was Mike Piazza after only 1 Piazza type of season. They should have waited to see if he could produce another season like that before giving him that type of money. Even if they were worried about him hitting free agency. The Mauer contract was bad because it hamstrung Minnesota for the next decade.
They should have traded him to NY when the Yankees offered 3 top notch prospects for him. As for what sounds to me like a pure homer take on Piazza vs. Mauer, the latter had already won three batting titles and far outclassed Piazza on defense by the time MIN had opened negotiations. Should have gotten him out from behind the plate before the ink was dry.
They needed a 3ed baseman at the time. Beyond the pressure the Twins felt to lock up a hometown hero, this extension was signed right after the state granted funding for Target Field — something the Twins explicitly said would help generate the revenue needed to boost payroll. It really was a perfect PR storm. For those saying it was a terrible contract, keep in mind that the Twins were also opening a new stadium right when Mauer came up for free agency.
So it was also a move by ownership to sell tickets. He was the face of the franchise and to let him walk before a new stadium open would have been a disaster. Just because he is the best in the game right this second, does not make him an all time great. JT has never even had a 5. Would be the first candidate where the hometown fans lead the fight against the candidacy. A significant portion of Twins fans view Mauer not as one of the greatest Twins of all time, which he unquestionably is; instead, to many in Twins Territory, Joe Mauer is a punchline.
Given the level of tomfoolery evinced by your average professional athlete, Joe Mauer is a saint. Joe Mauer has been a consummate professional. He never badmouths his teammates or the fans — literally anyone. He has never been remotely close to any type of controversy or bad behavior. He won Halloween last year. Joe Mauer: Beast dad Mode. Halloween pic. Let me just scroll down a bit, maybe check out some comments. I love Twitter comments because they, too, are usually heartwarming.
There are two inextricably linked reasons that fans like Kraut23 act like colossal misanthropes when it comes to Joseph Patrick Mauer: The Injuries and The Contract. Apologies for the forthcoming Bolshevist diatribe. Owners contribute nothing of value to an organization.
Yes, they have the money, but the Twins could be a damn non-profit run by a public trust or owned by the fans. Sports franchises have always been littered with weird, miserly, felonious , blood-sucking, racist, shady-ass, cretinous , Nazi-sympathizing , creepy owners.
As Twins fans, a terrible owner literally founded our franchise. Read More. Already Subscribed? Login Here. Close Cookie Settings. Your Privacy When you visit any web site, it may store or retrieve information on your browser, mostly in the form of cookies.

If Mauer had become a free agent in the fall, he probably would have been the most coveted free agent since Rodriguez reached free agency after the season. Paul surrounded by family and friends. Barring a last-minute hold-up, it appears that he will play his entire career for the Twins.
The Rockies made a similar investment in Todd Helton during the last decade, and while Helton has performed well during the course of the contract, his high salary restricted Colorado from making other moves. Enjoy our content?
