Martin, for the rest of your life, this is worth remembering — we are NOT all administrators. And nor should we be; administer from an admin account, work every day from your everyday account. Why not just do some renames? The extra challenge we have now mid with Windows 10 is how these applications handle multiple virtual desktops.

What if Firefox does not update the sessionstore. We have a system where some of our files are on a central server and some on a local machine. Some of the time the backups work but not always. I just discovered that the last backup was from December so none of my tabs and bookmarks since then are saved.
Firefox lost 2 out of my 4 packed windows, was about to despair but renaming previous. Then I see the NEW version, and it starts sounding a lot more complicated and arcane. Way too many different files and names to keep track of. Also, what if you just name the newest folder? Do you really have to rename the whole sequence of them to work properly?
In addition I have other problems. Am I supposed to do something with its contents after opening sessionstore-backups file? No recovery. If the 2 March session is lost forever does 6 refer to the most recent previous. How do I open the root folder and how do I copy a file to it?
I used Recuva to restore all the session restore files but each time it only restored one tab, I tried numerous times following instructions above for Firefox 56 and newer instructions. I have tried the two options that have worked for me in the past, to load some tabs and end firefox with task manager to resemble a crash or ending normally and copying the recover file to sessionstore. After repeated attempts it now does not give any options to restore tabs, I have checked about:config and setting is ok.
