What should you wear to physiotherapy

If you are not one to wear shorts normally then you can bring a pair with you to change into or the Physiotherapist can provide you with a clean pair to wear during the consultation. Designated change areas are available.

Similar to what we have spoken about above; assessment and treatment of the shoulder and elbow, commonly requires visibility of the shoulder and shoulder blades. Looking at shoulder blade mechanics can provide valuable information about contributing mechanics or movement patterns influencing pain at the shoulder or further down the arm.

This means for most upper limb assessments and treatment of back pain you may be asked to remove your shirt. For women wearing an appropriate bra such as a sports bra therefore can be most appropriate.

Draping with towels is a common occurrence to assist in maintaining modesty and feeling comfortable through all aspects of assessment and treatment. For an active rehabilitation class it is best to wear comfortable exercise clothing as you are likely to work up a sweat and need to move freely. This can include a range of clothing options, however typically it is best to avoid wearing jeans, trackpants or other restrictive clothing.

To maintain modesty it is also advisable to avoid wearing dresses or skirts. Overall we ask that you dress comfortably and use your best judgement. The consult can always be modified depending on your choices and preferences.

We ask that you consider wearing or bringing shorts if you are seeking treatment for an injury at the hips down, and wear appropriate underclothing for back and upper limb injuries. We commonly keep spare shorts available and have available change spaces. Your Physiotherapist is always happy to discuss with you additional details to ensure professional and respectful management.

So shorts or loose pants that can be rolled up are perfect for lower-leg complaints. Definitely wear sneakers as you will most likely be required to perform exercises. Sports shoes are easy to put on and take off. Dress shoes, sandals or high heels are not appropriate. Swimwear also works. And lastly, if you are coming in from work, pack a bag of activewear and a spare change of clothes. Skip to content Skip to primary sidebar Skip to footer. Now, she has to go to physical therapy multiple times a week to help decrease the pain and increase her mobility.

For her first day of physical therapy, Terry showed up to her appointment in tight-fitting leggings, and slip-on shoes. When she arrived at her appointment, she quickly realized that her tight-fitting leggings were not ideal. Her physical therapist needed to examine her knee — view it, manually manipulate it, etc.

Now, both Terry and her therapist are trying to work around her clothing and make it through the first round of physical therapy successfully. Talk about frustrating. When it comes to choosing an appropriate outfit for your physical therapy appointments there are a few basic things to keep in mind.

The clothing you wear may have to do with the specific injury or body part that is being treated during your therapy appointment. It is especially important that you avoid any tight-fitting, restrictive clothing. If you have longer hair, consider bringing something to pull your hair back.

Always, always wear socks and sneakers to your physical therapy appointment — unless you are unable to. You may be doing a number of different exercises that require you to stand on surfaces that you are not used to. Slip-on shoes, open-toed shoes, and shoes that do not have non-skid soles can put you at risk for an injury.

Avoiding an injury will help us all achieve our priority: helping you heal. Always wear appropriate footwear to any physical therapy appointment. To provide the safest and most thorough care, we have to commit to a clean environment and do all that we can to practice infection control procedures. We suggest these clothing recommendations to make consultations more fluent and help maximise your time with the physio, however there are always alternatives.

If a client is not willing or is unable to wear particular clothing because of personal, cultural or any other reasons, the physio can improvise to work through or around clothing or utilise towels and sheets for privacy.

The main factor when dressing for physio is making sure we can access and assess the area of concern in a way that is comfortable for the patient. Gym clothes or stretchy clothes are not prerequisites for your session. Your clothing should be comfortable and fit in a way that does not restrict your movement so you can still bend, squat or lift your arms above your head.
