Harder to organize people together. Randoms just jump into freeplay because it's the easiest way to play quickly. The game doesn't have a big dedicated population. Just some reasons but ultimately survival could technically replace freeplay if people on steam dedicate themselves to that mode.

Two teams of 6 competed and whoever won went on to the next round. With each consecutive win, you would get more and more GP. It capped out after 5 wins, and gave GP from there on.
