The intermediary providers must update their DNS caches from time to time. They have to keep caches, in order not to overload the internet. Consequently, DNS caching time has been reducing. Nowadays, we can see it in a few hours only. The following graphic explains the DNS propagation time, on average:.
Whenever the caching time expires, it will query again the domain registrar to check for any updates in DNS. Or even, we can simply change our local DNS servers. This way there is a big chance to force the new DNS to update.
The routing of all communication between computers on the internet is handled by IP addresses rather than domain names. The following example should help you to visualize the process. Like our telephone system, every active phone line has a phone number used to facilitate the connection of one line to another. To make a call, the phone that initiates the connection must have the number of the line to which it wants to connect. In much the same way, your computer must find the correct IP address of the website you want to visit on the server before it can send the request to that server for a webpage.
The same process applies to all other services such as email, chat, or games on the internet. DNS records function similar to a phone book, relating domain names with IP addresses to reach these services. DNS hosts hold the zones for their domains and answer requests with the records from the zones for those domains. When you make changes to your zone, you are making changes to the host.
A resolver is a DNS server that will send requests to other DNS servers for the records from their zones to answer the requests that it receives. These sorts of requests are called recursive requests. DNS Resources There are some useful websites which will help you see this propagation process, and show you when your website should be visible: What's my DNS?
Most commonly you would use this to check if the A Record for your site has propagated out to the rest of the world. If any locations show a red 'X', it means that location does not have any DNS information for the domain name being queried yet. If it has been longer than 48 hours, your site is not loading, and the two sites above do not show available DNS records, there may be further issues with the configuration of your site.
